Living in Barrie: Celebrating Our Community While Working Toward Positive Change

Barrie is a beautiful city with so much to offer. From its welcoming neighbourhoods and parks to its growing diversity and family-friendly atmosphere, it is a place many people are proud to call home. Like every community, however, there are areas where we can continue to grow and improve.

One challenge I have noticed is the difficulty of having open conversations about racism and bias. While many people in Barrie are kind and welcoming, there can sometimes be a reluctance to acknowledge that racism and discrimination still exist. When these issues are overlooked or dismissed, it becomes harder for individuals and families who have experienced them to feel heard and supported.

Creating a stronger community begins with listening. Open, respectful dialogue allows us to better understand one another's experiences and work together to build a city where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.

Another area that deserves attention is our education system, particularly the support available for children with learning disabilities. As a parent, I experienced firsthand how difficult it was to secure the educational assistance my child needed in elementary school. Despite seeking support, the resources available were not enough to help my child reach their full potential. As a result, we had to rely heavily on teaching at home to bridge the gaps.

Every child learns differently. Some require additional support, specialized teaching strategies, or individualized learning plans. When these supports are available early, children gain confidence, develop stronger academic skills, and are better prepared for future success.

Investing in special education is not simply about helping individual students—it strengthens our entire community. Schools that provide inclusive learning environments create opportunities for every child to succeed, regardless of their learning style or abilities.

Barrie has tremendous potential. By encouraging honest conversations about inclusion, recognizing the experiences of all community members, and strengthening educational support for students with learning disabilities, we can continue building a city that truly serves everyone.

Positive change starts with listening, understanding, and working together. I believe Barrie can continue to grow into a community where every family feels supported, every child has the opportunity to succeed, and every resident knows they belong.

Canadain education

 The education system in Canada has room for improvement, particularly concerning support for students with disabilities and those from low-income families. There is a need for more teachers and educational assistants to provide the necessary assistance to students in the classroom. Often, teachers are pressed to cover the curriculum quickly, which can result in students not receiving the individualized attention they need to fully understand the material. 

Students with learning disabilities, in particular, may require additional time and tailored resources to succeed. It would be beneficial for assessments to be conducted in a timely manner, rather than having students wait for support, and for their learning needs to be recognized and accommodated appropriately.

Furthermore, the curriculum often reflects a limited perspective, primarily representing the experiences and histories of a white, privileged majority. This can lead to an incomplete understanding of diverse viewpoints. Enhancing the curriculum to include a broader range of authors and perspectives would enrich the educational experience for all students. Empowering students to engage in research and advocacy is important, and adequate support can facilitate this process.
